Every year, lakhs of students clear NEET but still lose out on a good MBBS seat simply because they didn’t understand the counseling process. This guide breaks down the entire MBBS admission journey in India — from eligibility and NEET UG to AIQ/state counseling, document verification, and seat confirmation — so you walk in prepared, not confused.

Getting into a medical college in India is not a single exam — it is a nine-step journey, and most students only prepare for step one. Every year we meet bright students who scored well in NEET but lost a good seat because they misunderstood a counseling deadline or missed a document. This guide walks you through the complete, current MBBS admission process in India, so nothing catches you off guard.

Who Is Eligible for MBBS Admission?

Before you plan your counseling strategy, make sure you tick every eligibility box:

  • You must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as compulsory subjects.
  • You need a minimum of 50% aggregate in PCB for General category candidates, and 45% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates.
  • You must be at least 17 years old by December 31 of the admission year.
  • You must be an Indian citizen, NRI, or OCI cardholder.
  • You must qualify NEET UG — there is no other route into an MBBS seat in India. Medical colleges no longer conduct their own entrance tests; the entire process is centralized around one exam.

Step-by-Step MBBS Admission Process

Step 1: Register for NEET UG. Applications open on the NTA website, typically early in the year. Fill in your details carefully — a mismatch between your NEET form and school certificates is one of the most common causes of avoidable delay later.

Step 2: Pay the fee and download your admit card. Keep a printed and digital copy; you will need it multiple times during counseling and verification.

Step 3: Appear for the NEET UG exam, usually held in May.

Step 4: Check your scorecard and All India Rank, released roughly a month after the exam.

Step 5: Register for counseling. This is where most confusion happens. You will register separately for:

  • All India Quota (AIQ) counseling, conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), covering 15% of government college seats, all AIIMS and JIPMER seats, deemed university seats, and central university seats. AIQ seats are open to candidates from any state.
  • State Quota counseling, conducted by your home state’s authority, covering the remaining 85% of government seats. This usually requires proof of domicile.

Step 6: Fill your choices. Research cutoffs from the last two to three years for each college and course before locking your preferences — this single step decides more outcomes than any other in the process.

Step 7: Lock your choices before the deadline. Counseling portals open and close within tight windows; missing a deadline means missing that entire round.

Step 8: Accept your allotted seat and pay the provisional admission fee to confirm your place.

Step 9: Report to the college in person with all original documents within the specified reporting window.

Documents You Must Carry

Keep these ready well in advance, in both original and photocopy form: NEET admit card and scorecard, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and certificates, transfer certificate, character certificate, domicile or residence certificate, category certificate (if applicable), PwD certificate (if applicable), a valid photo ID such as Aadhaar or passport, migration certificate, the seat allotment letter from MCC or your state authority, and 10-15 passport-size photographs.

Understanding the Fee Landscape

Fees vary dramatically depending on where you land a seat. AIIMS institutions charge only a few thousand rupees a year — AIIMS Delhi’s fee, for instance, runs into a few thousand rupees only. Government medical colleges are similarly affordable. Private and deemed universities are a different story altogether, with total course fees ranging anywhere from roughly ₹50 lakh to over ₹1 crore, depending on the institution and quota.

Common Mistakes Students Make

Three mistakes account for most lost opportunities: missing a counseling registration window, filling choices without checking historical cutoffs, and failing to keep documents ready for verification. A fourth, quieter mistake is choosing a college purely on brand name without checking its infrastructure, faculty strength, and clinical exposure.

Final Word

NEET is only the entry ticket — the real decisions happen during counseling. Understanding each round, respecting every deadline, and keeping your paperwork airtight is what actually determines which medical college you walk into. If you want a second set of eyes on your rank, category, and college shortlist before you fill your choices, that is exactly the kind of decision worth getting mentored on rather than guessing alone.
